So you've decided it's time to take your skincare routine for more seriously. That's great news...but where to start?
It can be overwhelming when you start looking at all the men's skincare products out there on the market, so we've put together a simple guide to help get you started.
Basic skin care routine for men
You want to be cleansing your face in the morning and at night. But let's just start with night, so we are removing all the daily grime and allowing the creams and serums that follow to be applied to clean skin.
AM
Cleanse, Moisturiser and Sunscreen (absolute must), whether you are indoors, outdoors or driving a car, truck or other motor vehicle.
PM
1 ) Face Cleansers
You can choose any men's facial cleansers you like. Ideally, if you wear sunscreen, you need an oil-based cleanser to remove it, or a face cloth/washer (more buffing power). You could also do a double cleanse with your chosen cleaners to help remove the sunscreen and daily grime.
2) Serums
Next you want to apply a serum, the tricky bit, but they are also the one product (aside from cleansing your skin and sunscreen) that will make the biggest difference to your skin.
Choosing your serum. The best way to assess your skin is to look in the mirror and check the first thing you see. Is it clogged pores? Do you feel as though you have fine lines? Pigmentation (darker skin patches)? Once you've identified the skin condition you'd most like to improve, you can look for the serum to help fix it.
Best serums for:
- Anti-aging - Retinol (helps with skin turnover), collagen, hyaluronic acid
- Dehydration - Hyaluronic acid, (face scrubs and moisturisers help here too)
- Pigmentation - AHAs, Retinols, Vit C, Niacinamide
- Pore Refinement - BHA - Salicylic Acid
3 ) Moisturisers
After your serum you want to lock it in with a moisturiser. Depending on your skin type (dry, oily, combination) you want to choose a cream that feels like its absorbing and not sitting on the skin, in general there are many everyday face moisturisers which will do the job, which one isn't as important as it is to be consistent with it.
