Back and chest acne, often called 'bacne', is incredibly common in men and frustratingly stubborn. While facial breakouts get most of the attention, body acne can be just as uncomfortable, noticeable and impact your confidence. The good news is once you understand why it happens, it becomes easier to manage and prevent.
Here's whats actually going on beneath the surface and how to clear it.
Why men are prone to back and chest acne?
Men naturally produce more oil (sebum) than women because of the higher testosterone levels. The extra oil combined with sweat, dead skin cells and bacteria, caused by trapped heat from your clothes, in areas like the chest and the back where pores are larger are more likely to have break outs.
Common Triggers;
- Sweat & Friction - workouts, tradie workdays, commuting, sitting in your car or wearing a back pack can trap sweat against the skin. Tight shirts or synthetic fabrics make this worse by preventing airflow.This creates the perfect environment for clogged pores.
- Larger Pores on your Body - The skin on your chest and your back contains more sebaceous glands than other parts of your body, more glands, more oil more chances of blockages
- Skipping proper cleansing especially after exercise - Leaving sweat sitting on your skin after a gym session is one of the biggest contributors to bacne. Even 30-60minutes can make a difference. A rinse helps but a targeted treatment cleanser is better.
- Hormones & stress - Hormonal shifts increase oil production. Stress also raises cortisol levels which can trigger inflammation and worsen breakouts. This is why flare ups often appear during busy work periods or poor sleep cycles.
- Hair removal - Either removal by shavers or creams can cause bacne, from either dull or dirty blades causing friction and irritation. Hair removal creams can affect your ph level, especially if left on too long, causing skin irritation.
How to treat chest and back acne effectively
Here's what we believe works best
1. Use a proper body cleanser with active ingredients
Standard soap usually isn't enough. Gentle cleanser that hydrates and cleans. Look for ingredients like;
-
- Salicylic acid ( clears pores)
- Benzoyl peroxide (kills acne bacteria)
- Tea tree oil (reduces inflammation)
Use daily especially after sweating.
2. Shower sooner after workouts
This is one habit that will make a big difference, remove the sweat, bacteria and friction before it starts forming breakouts.
3. Wear breathable fabrics
Natural fibres like cotton allow airflow and reduce moisture build up. Synthetic gym gear is fine during the workout but change as soon as possible. Small habit but big impact.
4. Exfoliation weekly (not daily)
Dead skin cells contribute heavily to clogged pores on the body.
use;
-
- a gentle exfoliating scrub
- a chemical exfoliating body wash or
- a tool such as body scrub gloves, or a body scrubber like this one. Tooletries body scrub
Once or twice a week is enough, over scrubbing can make it worse.
5. Avoid heavy moisturisers on acne prone areas
When choosing a body moisturiser choose a light weight, non comedogenic body lotion instead of a thick cream.
6. Wash gym gear and shirts regularly
I know it sounds obvious but it's often overlooked. I'm also going to add in washing your sheets and towels regularly (once a week) and going to bed clean will also make a big difference to your skin. Re wearing shirts or lying in previously sweaty environments can re introduce bacteria directly to your skin. Fresh gear - clear skin.
7. Best Practice hair removal
When removing hair on the chest or back always use a sharp razor, shave cream or gel and shave in the direction of the hair grain. Wash gently after with a cleanser and lightly moisturiser. Loose fitting clothing is best to stop friction from the freshly shaved area. You should also exfoliate the area 1-2 times weekly to prevent ingrown hairs.
A simple routine that works for most men
Daily;
-
- Shower after sweating
- Use salicylic acid body wash
- wear breathable clothing
Weekly;
-
- Body exfoliation once or twice
Being consistent beats complexity.
Final thoughts, body acne is caused from oil production, sweat and friction leading to blocked pores. The good news is with a few daily good habits and targeted products you can see a noticeable improvement in a few short weeks.
