A Men's Guide to Choosing the Right Face Cleanser
Choosing a face cleanser might seem simple but with so many more options these days knowing which one is right for your skin can be confusing.
The best face cleanser for men isn't necessarily the most expensive or the one with the most ingredients. It's the one that suits your skin type, your skin concerns and your daily routine. You don't want to have a tight feeling after washing, skin irritation or dryness.
Choosing a cleanser thats right for your skin type can be one of the easiest and quickest ways to improve your skin condition. Especially considering we are cleaning our face twice daily.
Start by Identifying Your Skin Type -
( check out skin type & skin concern blog)
Before choosing your cleanser, work out what skin type you are.
Oily Skin
If your face becomes shiny during the day, particularly around your forehead, nose and chin, you may have oily skin.
You may also have enlarged looking pores, blackheads and frequent breakouts.
Cleansers to look for
- Gel or foaming cleansers
- Lightweight formulas
- Ingredients that help remove excess oil
- Non-comedogenic formulas if you're prone to blocked pores
Avoid extremely harsh cleansers that leave your face feeling stripped. While they may make your skin feel squeaky clean, over-cleansing can leave your skin uncomfortable and may produce more oil.
Dry Skin
If your skin often feels tight after washing, looks flaky or feels rough, you may have dry skin. Look for gentle, hydrating cleansers that clean without stripping your skin. Cream, lotion, low foaming or oil cleansers can be a good choice.
Look for ingredients such as
- Hyaluronic acid
- Glycerin
- Ceramides
- Squalane
- Nourishing plant oils
The goal shouldn't be to make your face feel squeaky clean, it should feel clean, comfortable and soft.
Combination Skin
Combination skin means you have both oily and dry areas. A common pattern is oily forehead, nose and chin, known as the T-Zone combined with normal or dry cheeks.
Look for a balanced cleanser that removes excess oil without drying out the rest of your face.
A gentle gel cleanser is often a good starting point.
Sensitive skin
If your skin becomes red, itchy, irritated or uncomfortable easily, you may have sensitive skin.
When choosing a cleanser keep things simple.
Look for;
- Fragrance-free formulas
- Gentle cleansing ingredients
- Minimal Potential irritants
- Hydrating ingredients
- Products specifically formulated for sensitive skin
Also want to avoid aggressive scrubbing and very hot water, which can make irritation worse.
Normal Skin
If your skin generally feels comfortable, isn't particularly oily or dry and rarely becomes irritated, you may have normal skin.
You have more flexibility when choosing a cleanser, but theres still no reason to use a harsh product.
A gentle daily cleanser is usually all you need.
Should You Choose a Cleanser With Exfoliating Ingredients?
Some facial cleansers contain exfoliating ingredients such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid and or other acids. These can be useful for specific concerns including excess oil, blocked pores and uneven skin tone. But you don't necessarily need an exfoliating cleanser every day.
If you are already using a seperate exfoliating product, retinol or other active serum, adding too many active products can increase your chances of irritation.
5 Mistakes Men Make When Choosing a Face Cleanser
1 - Using body wash on your face
Your face deserves a product formulated for facial skin. Body washes can be too harsh for some peoples facial skin. Best to stick to a facial cleanser.
2 - Choosing the strongest possible cleanser
That squeaky clean feeling isn't necessarily a sign your cleanser is working well. Its probably drying your skin out more than required.
3 - Washing with hot water
Hot water can contribute to dryness and irritation. Luke warm water is generally a better choice. Hot water can also increase your chances of capillaries around the nose and cheeks.
4 - Assuming expensive means better
Price doesn't determine whether a cleanser is right for your skin. Price can mean better quality ingredients have been used, but making sure its the right fit for your skin type is always best.
5 - Changing products constantly
Give your skincare routine time to work. Most products can take 1-3 months before you start to see results. Constantly switching products can make it difficult to work out whats actually helping your skin.
